A: I have a disability, & I had to cancel a couple of appointments with my NHS dentist – I phoned prior to the appointments & I had explained that a ‘flare-up’ in my condition could happen when I’m stressed, & of course I’ve always been scared of the dentists but made myself go as I was worried about the effects of my meds on my teeth. What I wasn’t expecting was to be told that they would not give me another appointment. I’ve been without a dentist now for over 5 years & my mouth has suffered as a result. I was half way through going from my wreck to partial dentures, the bottom ones have never fitted – & I know for definite that I now need two full sets of dentures & am at a loss of how to get a dentist again – I am desperate, but cannot afford to pay privately as I’m on benefits, sadly. I don’t really go out or see people any more as I’m so embarrased having to wear masks during Covid was a bit of relief because I could hide my mouth from people. We desperately need a dental hospital here based across a couple of sites so they’re as accessible as possible for our people.

A: Have been with the same dentist for 40 years and always had excellent treatment as an NHSpatient. I received a letter in March telling me I was being taken off their list as they were having to cut the number of NHSpatients.
My alternatives were to find another dentist (nigh on impossible in our area) or sign up to a private dental plan. I expressed my unhappiness about this with the practice manager but got nowhere at all.
